About Us

In October 1967  Spurgeon Mortuary, Inc. was established by Jennings “Jay”  and Jean Spurgeon.  They continued to operate the Mortuary until their retirement in 1983 at which time Terry L. Ellyson became President & CEO. The name was changed to Spurgeon-Ellyson Mortuary, Inc. and eventually shortened to Ellyson Mortuary, Inc.  In 2004, son Terry “Lee” Ellyson II joined the business as a licensed funeral director/embalmer.

Sadly on July 22, 2023, Terry unexpectedly passed away. At that time, Terry “Lee” Ellyson II assumed the position of President & CEO.

Early in 2010, the structure was destroyed by fire and rebuilt that same year.  The new building officially opened December 2010.

Ellyson Mortuary, Inc. has always been locally owned and operated service serving Gilmer and surrounding counties.
